In Montreal, in 1914, the Government of Quebec created the first forensic laboratory in North America. Today, the Laboratoire de sciences judiciaires et de médecine légale (LSJML), under the responsibility of the Ministry of Public Security (MSP), is like most modern forensic laboratories, bringing together different fields of scientific expertise: toxicology, biology and DNA, documents and writing, chemistry, fires and explosions, ballistics, image processing, forensic pathology, histology, odontology and anthropology. This expert roster promotes synergy between staff and constant improvement of services.

In addition to providing expertise in forensic science and forensic pathology, the Laboratory provides assistance on major crime scenes, certification of standard alcohol solutions and alcohol screening devices (ADA), advice-services, testimonials and training.

The mission of the Laboratory is to carry out objective expertise to support and inform the administration of justice from a scientific point of view. To do this, it carries out forensic science and forensic pathology expertise and supports police and judicial investigations.
