In the morning hours of November 25, 2011, confusion and fear gripped the small town of Innisfail, Alberta, after a young mother was violently killed when her apartment was ripped apart by an explosion. Witnesses relayed to police how the victim had received an anonymous gift-wrapped box on her doorstep, and in her curiosity, she never saw the bomb that lay waiting inside. The investigation that ensued pooled together expert resources from across the RCMP, including major crime, forensic ident, technical specialists and forensic laboratory examiners. Details will be presented of the crime scene, murder investigation, forensic analysis of the evidence and re-construction of the improvised explosive device (IED), which together culminated in the identification and arrest of the bomber. The impact of the forensic evidence presented at court during the criminal trial of the accused will also be discussed. This story…. is the real CSI.
